چکیده

Background: Bacterial endogenous endophthalmitis (BEE) is uncommon and severe. Few patients who have this disease are initially misdiagnosed. Its victims usually have an underlying disease which predisposes them to infection. Blood and vitreous cultures are the most frequently used media of establishing the diagnosis. Staphylococcus aureus, group B streptococci, Streptococcus pneumonia and Listeria monocytogenes are the commonly found Gram positive organisms. The most common Gram negative causative bacteria are Klebsiella spp., Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Neisseria meningitidis. Gram negative organisms are responsible for the majority of cases reported from East Asian hospitals, but Gram positive organisms are more common in the developed world. Apart from being rare, BEE has very little literature and there has not been any publication on it in Northern India emphasizing on its management to the best of our knowledge.

Endogenous bacterial endophthalmitis (EE) is recognized as a major cause of visual loss with an associated mortality rate and is a diagnostic challenge in the early stages of the disease, with 16% to 63% of cases being initially misdiagnosed (T. Experimental endogenous endophthalmitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b.

Experimental endogenous endophthalmitis was produced in infant rats by either intranasal or intraperitoneal inoculation with Haemophilus influenzae type b and 5 days of age. The ocular disease occurred in about 50% of bacteremic animals who survived to age 12 days and probably represents metastatic bacterial infection secondary to hematogenous seeding. The lesion was a highly destructive suppur...
